Vistra Corporate Law (VCL) is an SRA regulated law firm which is part of Vistra, a $1.3bn turnover global corporate, trust and fiduciary services business. VCL provides English law corporate, commercial, employment and specialist corporate governance advice to Vistra’s global corporate, trust, fund and international expansion clients as well as other local and international corporate organisations. It also acts as general counsel to clients, managing international legal advice on a global basis.

The Commercial Solicitor Role            

Commercial solicitor based in the Vistra Bristol office (Templeback), working as part of the commercial law team to deliver legal services to Vistra clients, as well as other local and international corporate organisations.   

Key Responsibilities of the Commercial Solicitor:

  • Drafting and negotiating transactional commercial agreements as well as drafting standard agreements and terms of business for clients.
  • Ensuring that client requirements are interpreted precisely, responded to correctly and that the client is kept regularly informed of progress and costs.
  • Provide support within our sector specialisms, including technology and China.
  • Advising on intellectual property matters and compliance areas such as GDPR and competition law.
  • Work closely with clients, identifying ways in which we can develop the relationship and ensure client retention.
  • Work closely with international contacts from Vistra overseas offices, law firms and other professionals.
  • Identify, promote and develop business development opportunities wherever possible and to keep clients informed of new products, services and changes in legislation.
  • Be fully proficient with the relevant systems, procedures of Vistra Corporate Law (VCL) as a whole and to work with colleagues to ensure that the work processes of the Commercial department are carried out efficiently and effectively.
  • Supervise more junior employees, such as paralegals, in the provision of services to clients.
  • Produce regular legal updates for clients and provide thought leadership in the form of blogs and articles. 
  • Preserving and enhancing VCL’s reputation by endeavouring to achieve the highest standard of work at all times.
  • Undertake other duties and specified projects on an ad-hoc basis as required.

Qualifications and Other Requirements

  • Degree
  • Solicitors practising certificate. 
  • 2-4 years PQE commercial solicitor.

Commercial Solicitor Candidate Profile

  • Excellent legal training with a focus on commercial law and the ability to analyse instructions, understand the issues raised and action accordingly. 
  • The successful candidate will be very much in control of their own destiny, with the opportunity to specialise in due course in one of our existing specialist sectors or indeed to create their own sector or legal specialism.
  • Strong and adaptable communication skills, the ability to work with and advise global Vistra colleagues and management teams of large multinational organisations, through to the owners of small start-up enterprises. 
  • Able to lead on transactional and advisory commercial legal work, whilst knowing when to ask for supervision, managing and co-ordinating input from other lawyers and specialists Vistra colleagues (e.g. tax and accounting), working with and reporting to supervising director
  • An eager can-do attitude and a hunger for developing new business on a national and international level. They must also be adaptable, willing to take on unfamiliar work and develop expertise in new legal areas
