The Role

A fantastic opportunity to join the UK's main competition and consumer authority, The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), as a Head of Mergers Intelligence based in London.

The CMA's aim is to make markets work well for consumers, businesses and the wider economy and we are committed to being a diverse and inclusive organisation that reflects the wider UK population and consumers we serve. From investigating mergers that could restrict competition, to conducting market studies and investigations and enforcing competition and consumer law – the interests of the consumer are at the core of all CMA activity.

As the United Kingdom prepares to leave the EU, the CMA’s role is becoming even more important, monitoring merger activity in the UK with the aim of identifying mergers which may raise competition issues and need further investigation.

Key Responsibilities

The Head of Mergers Intelligence responsibilities will include:

  • Managing the Mergers Intelligence (MI) function
  • Leading the team which gathers/analyses information, recommending which mergers should be investigated
  • Using your legal, economic and/or business expertise
  • Ensuring that information collated by the MI function is systematically processed, researched, analysed, recorded - then recommended to senior management whether to call a merger case for review

The Head of Mergers Intelligence will also: 

  • Work with, manage and coach one or more Executive Officers 
  • Take the lead in communicating with senior managment
  • Take the lead in communicating with advisers of leading companies in the UK and globally, as well as officials from other national competition authorities

Candidate Requirements

The ideal candidate for this Head of Mergers Intelligence role will:

  • Have a proven track record of working in merger control, competition enforcement or a regulatory field;
  • OR as a competition Lawyer, economist or business consultant with experience of advising on and executing complex merger control or other competition, markets or regulatory cases
