Sport England, the public body responsible for promoting sport and physical activity across England, is currently seeking a new Head of Legal to join their Corporate Services Senior Leadership Team in Central London. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Lawyer with an extensive public sector background to step into a highly strategic role within an organisation that nurtures talented people from diverse backgrounds to excel to the top of their profession.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the successful candidate will be responsible for leading a team of people working on a wide range of legal matters. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Providing strategic, risk-based legal advice to Sport England’s Board and Executive Team to support delivery of the organisation’s objectives;
  • Drafting and negotiating a wide range of commercial agreements including property, intellectual property and funding agreements;
  • Supporting the organisation in identifying and setting up new and innovative models of investing public and National Lottery funds;
  • Providing strategic leadership for the information governance function.

The ideal candidate will be a senior Solicitor or Barrister, qualified in England & Wales (or equivalent jurisdiction) who has extensive understanding of commercial and contract law in the UK, and experience working within various public sector bodies, preferably within government. Excellent written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively externally, across the organisation and within a high performing team is also crucial.
