We have an exciting opportunity for a solicitor or barrister with proven experience of and commitment to advocacy. Our legal team is small, collegiate and highly collaborative, working to offer pragmatic legal advice across the regulatory work of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and present hearings and appeals before the disciplinary and appeal tribunals. The role is based in our Birmingham office, with occasional travel to London. 

This is a permanent position with an annual salary of between £50,000 and £55,000, plus a comprehensive benefits package.

The ideal candidate will have/be:
Regulatory expertise

  • Experience of disciplinary functions and processes in other professional regulators.
  • Strong understanding of, and commitment to, the principles of better regulation. 
  • Able to apply the principles in a way that is lawful, effective and pragmatic.
  • Demonstrates sound judgment reaching clear, unbiased, proportionate and reasoned decisions on progressing casework.

Technical knowledge

  • Experience of tribunal and/or court advocacy.
  • Sound knowledge of civil/criminal proceedings.
  • Practising barrister or solicitor with significant experience of advocacy before courts, tribunals or similar bodies.
  • Experience of supervising investigations and advising decision makers in writing and orally.

Communication

  • Strong personal and written communication skills, with an ability to tailor messages for different audiences, to influence or inform with clarity and precision. 
  • Able to command the respect of panels and to communicate confidently orally and in writing with lawyers and non-lawyers.
  • Able to influence others and work collaboratively in a larger, multi-disciplinary team.

  • Record of delivering operational results which support the objectives of the department and delivering against key performance indicators.
  • Commitment to delivering excellent customer service while dealing with sensitive and complex issues.
  • Able to work on own initiative and under direction and collaborate as part of cross functional teams.
  • Experience of working in an environment where priorities may change, taking responsibility for delivering results and implementing continuous improvement.
