Assistant Director of Legal Services - 18 months
A rare opportunity has arisen for an Interim Assistant Director of Legal Services to join a large and well established Local Authority in the West Midlands. The post holder will also act as Deputy Monitoring Officer for the Council, supporting the Monitoring Officer and liaising with Elected Members. The successful candidate will hold direct management responsibility for 7 Heads of Law, directly overseeing the entire legal team which consists of 140+ staff members.
The preferred candidate will support the Director of Legal Services with implementing the Council's change and transformation programme at an operational level. This is a very exciting time which will see the Council implement its strategy, with this role playing a vital part in the process. You will be instrumental in this change programme, working in collaboration with key internal and external stakeholders. You will work closely with the Director, Chief Executive and your colleagues to gain outcomes and deliver clear objectives. You will work very closely with the internal clients you provide advice to, assisting in developing successful long term working relationships.
This role will operate remotely for the foreseeable future, though there may be some expectation for office presence if Government and Council guidance should change. My client has excellent IT support infrastructure to enable remote working. With lap tops and mobile phones available the legal office has adapted to working from home for all staff during the Covid-19 crisis and ensures that the team is well placed to deal with future change as the situation develops.
This is a demanding job and is to manage a sizable team, so previous experience working as a Head of Legal Services at City, County or Unitary level is a prerequisite for this position. Experience of change management and steering organisations through an improvement journey would be desirable. If you have experience in creating and nurturing a supportive working environment where team members flourish this could be your ideal next move.
If you have a proven track record in providing strong, professional leadership, efficiently managing performance and resources, then we would welcome the opportunity to discuss this further with you.
We encourage interested applicants to apply immediately to be considered for short listing. Alternatively should you require further information or wish to discuss your suitability before applying please contact Kate Jasper in our Manchester office for a confidential discussion.
