Support the Group in provision/procurement of legal advice on IP matters affecting its business.

Our client is a world famous multinational mining business.

Description

This successful candidate will provide IP and related commercial legal advice t with a focus on supporting the new technology development and the data analytics functions. The role holder is proactively involved in the Group innovation projects and deal structures, including the commercialisation potential of IP by the business.

Specifically:

  • Advise in relation to IP and related commercial legal issues that affect the execution of their business plans including the protection, commercialisation and enforcement of the Group's IP.
  • Create awareness of, and communicate changes to, IP law.
  • Supporting the relevant Heads working on and leading technology implementation to identify credible transaction strategy, design, negotiation and execution to achieve their immediate, medium and longer terms objectives.
  • Lead IP legal support and enable innovation.
  • Lead the development of policies, systems, registers, procedures, precedents, playbooks and strategies of Group Legal for managing legal risks in relation to IP transactions and relationships
  • Draft and negotiate (or supervise external lawyers drafting) agreements to document IP transactions and relationships for the Group, specifically joint development agreements and IP licences
  • Advising T&S and Group in relation to IP strategy and commercialisation
  • Contributing to and advising the Business' Innovation Committee in relation to IP strategy
  • Engage with CFOs and other senior stakeholders in Business Units and advising Business Units on implementation of IP policy, and ensuring "fit for purpose" implementation to facilitate reporting and monitoring.
  • Developing programmes to provide ongoing training as well as skills to T&S and business around the assessment of, and decision-making in relation to, legal risk in IP and commercial transactions and relationships for the Group
  • Continuously building and expanding trust relationships with key stakeholders so as to remain central to innovation and IP related strategy development and implementation

Profile

The successful candidate will be a solicitor in England and Wales or other relevant common law jurisdiction such as Singapore, Australia, New Zealand or Canada.

They will have

  • at least 5 years' experience in IP law Ideally, prior experience both in private practice (with a reputable law firm) and in an In-House role/on secondment.
  • experience of non-contentious IP and commercial law (including patents) together with and excellent working knowledge of contractual principles
  • a commercial understanding of consequences of legal scenarios/decisions relating to IP
  • A demonstrated competence in communicating legal concepts in business-friendly terms
  • Demonstrated legal expertise with a willingness to develop complimentary business skills
