Your new role
An exciting opportunity has arisen in a high-profile and fast-paced environment due to somebody leaving the team. This opportunity could either be for an assistant legal counsel or a legal counsel. As part of a small team, you will support the General Counsel in providing legal advice to the business on all aspects of public law, as well as regulatory and litigation.
- Advising on regulatory and public law issues, including in relation to organisational decision making, policy and process development, statutory interpretation and the exercise of the Institute's public functions;
- Advising in connection with threatened or actual judicial review proceedings;
- Supporting and facilitating the Institute's internal review mechanism (Procedural Review) to ensure that decision making is fair, consistent and lawful; and
- Advising in connection with any litigation commenced by, or defended by, the Institute.
In addition to the above, you will be expected to advise on other ad-hoc issues such as trademarks, IP, commercial contracts and procurement law issues. Ultimately, you will help the team to deliver the best possible commercial outcomes.
What you'll need to succeed
You must be a qualified Solicitor or Barrister in England and Wales with either NQ-3 PQE (assistant legal counsel) or 3+ PQE (legal counsel). You will be able to demonstrate good public law experience and have a strong understanding of in-house legal demands within a government context. You should be able to demonstrate good knowledge of judicial review and regulatory law ideally with experience in litigation and having dealt with regulatory issues in the education sector. In addition you will have the ability to approach legal issues applying sound analysis, secure legal research and reliable legal judgement, and to appreciate legal risk.
