Legal Adviser (competition and consumer law specialism programme)

£51,810 - £59,405 per annum
2y FTC, with the opportunity of a permanent role at the end of the programme

Are you a qualified lawyer looking for a new challenge? If so, then this role might be for you.
About Us:
The CMA is responsible for promoting competition and consumer protection across the UK. Our aim is to make markets work well for consumers, businesses, and the economy.
The Role:
We are looking for qualified lawyers with no previous competition or consumer law experience to join our expanding team of advisory lawyers.
If successful, you will take part in a two-year structured training programme during which you will gain experience working on a mixture of competition and consumer law matters. You will be expected to complete relevant qualifications in both competition and consumer law (for which funding will be provided by the CMA).
The types of work you may be involved in during the two-year programme include:
- Competition law enforcement: (for example the paroxetine and recently opened Apple and Facebook cases).
- Consumer law enforcement: (for example tackling misleading online reviews and endorsements, unfair promotions by gambling firms and ensuring fair holiday cancellation and refund rights during the COVID-19 pandemic).
- Merger control: (for example the Phase 2 investigation into the Facebook/GIPHY merger and the recent Sabre/Farelogix litigation).
- Markets work: (for example the current market studies into mobile ecosystems and into electric vehicle charging, and past work on digital advertising and funeral services).
- Regulatory work: ensuring fair conduct in the appeals and references to the CMA in regulated sectors – often concerning key price controls.
- Digital markets regulation: (for example supporting the CMA’s involvement in the Digital Regulation Cooperation Forum and the forthcoming establishment of the Digital Markets Unit).
- UK internal market and subsidy control: (for example supporting the CMA’s Office of the Internal Market, and post-Brexit subsidy control)
Subject to satisfactory performance, the expectation is that successful candidates will be kept on after the end of the two-year period as a permanent member of the CMA’s legal team advising on competition and/or consumer law matters.
