ABOUT US
The Government Legal Department (GLD) is the largest provider of legal services across the many different government departments. Our work touches on most aspects of public life, providing legal advice on everything from roads and rivers to health and human rights.
The department has more than 14 client-facing advisory teams who provide legal advice on the development, design, and implementation of government policies, decisions, and legislation.
The litigation lawyers within the GLD cover a wide range of high-profile cases of constitutional importance. We look at a full range of judicial review challenges in areas such as justice, health, defence, immigration, planning, and national security.
We also represent large Government Departments such as the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Defence – dealing in topics like ECHR, personal injury, clinical negligence, misfeasance in public office, false imprisonment, and malicious prosecution. Litigation lawyers also provide expert representation in relation to inquests and public inquiries. We regularly litigate through the higher courts to the Supreme Court and offer the opportunity to handle cases at the forefront of the developing law.
THE ROLE
Our Senior Litigators manage complex and varied caseloads within a supportive team environment, working alongside counsel from the Attorney General’s Panels. They also play an important co-ordination role when litigation involves cross cutting legal issues for diverse Government Departments
We’re hiring Grade 6 Litigation Lawyers to work across a number of teams within the Litigation Group National Security Team division. These teams include:
Advising HMG on legal proceedings involving national security
Litigation concerning matters of national security handle cases across a variety of jurisdictions and areas of law. This involves advising HMG clients on public and private law litigation in the High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court. Additionally this team handle inquests, inquiries, and matters of national security relating to immigration, as well as statutory appeals and Investigatory Powers Tribunal cases.
Special Advocate Support Office (SASO)
This team perform a critical role protecting the rule of law, helping to ensure that HMG can rely on national security-sensitive information without infringing on individuals' human rights. This is done through the use of "closed material procedures" (CMPs) and the involvement of Special Advocates appointed by the Attorney General. This is a unique role within GLD which extends to litigation in both England & Wales and Northern Ireland.
ABOUT YOU
You must be qualified to practise as a Solicitor, Barrister, or Chartered Legal Executive in England and Wales (or will be qualified within three months of the application date).
You must have completed a training contract/pupillage/qualifying employment or have been exempted from this by the Law Society, the Bar Council or CILEx. Applicants qualified in a jurisdiction outside England and Wales will be required to undertake the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Scheme within 5 years of appointment, and employment will be conditional upon the successful completion of the QLTS within this time period.
Ideally, you’ll have an honours degree in any subject graded 2.1 or higher or equivalent if you hold an overseas degree qualification. We will also consider applicants who do not have a 2.1 degree, but only if you can provide evidence of professional achievement, qualifications, or experience that satisfies the requirements of this role.
You must also be a UK national who has been living in the UK for at least 10 years and hasn’t taken an extended holiday or leave of stay outside of the UK during that time.
Ideally, you’ll have a thorough understanding of litigation, public law and an understanding of the role of lawyers working within the government.
You’ll be able to competently and reliably make legal judgements and anticipate legal risks. You’ll also ensure service delivery adheres to legal, regulatory, and security requirements, both within our division and across the many other government divisions we provide legal advice to.
We’re looking for a strategic thinker who sees the bigger picture – someone who can spot legal issues in their wider context and advise accordingly. You’ll be a great communicator, translating complex and sometimes sensitive information in a clear and concise way that’s easy to understand.
We’re looking for a team player who’s ready to build strong relationships both with colleagues and key stakeholders around the organisation.
