Commercial law firm in London is looking to recruit an Education lawyer of 0 to 3 years’ PQE. The team undertakes legal work for schools and colleges and is broadly organised into three teams: (1) Academy Projects and Property Team (2) School Support Team; and (3) Schools HR Team. A large part of our practice is acting for Academy Trusts and this work is growing as more schools become academies and operate independently of local authorities. In addition, they act for a number of education charities and foundation bodies. Education is a heavily regulated sector and their lawyers typically advise on statutory provisions and case law and the application of statutory and non-statutory guidance. A role has been identified in the Academy Projects Team in the Education Department, specifically to support with Academy conversions, mergers and transfer/ re-brokerage projects. You will be involved in providing a broad range of Education advice to schools via the Academy Projects Team. This includes a varied and interesting workload covering corporate and governance matters for Academy Trusts; funding documentation for Academies; contract transfer matters including contract assignments or novations; negotiations on transfer liabilities and warranties, and employment/TUPE and property related work. More recently the team has been instructed on some new large-scale conversion and merger projects which require additional support.

Candidates will be enthusiastic and genuinely interested in what schools do and how they operate.  You will need to be able to handle a varied workload and be organised to manage competing deadlines and priorities at certain times of a project. Experience of the Education sector is desirable but not essential however you must be willing to embrace training to get up to speed fast with issues affecting schools and other education organisations. You will currently be working in a law firm or for a local authority or other public sector organisation and will have the ability to cope with an intellectually stimulating and varied workload.
