An opportunity exists for a Paralegal to join the Civil Litigation team at a large Public Sector organisaiton in Manchester.

My client is a key player in the Public Sector in Manchester. They are looking for a paralegal to join their department, and work across Civil Litigation matters.
Description
Civil Litigation Paralegal
- To respond to letters of claim, claim forms and various applications in relation to civil litigation.
- To investigate all types of civil claims.
- Consider and decide on liability.
- Report to Insurers/Force Management/external solicitors and loss adjusters if appropriate.
- Adhere to Civil Procedure Rules.
- Draft statements.
- Research case law.
- Action unjustified/fraudulent claims.
- Promulgate lessons learnt and best practice.
- To liaise with other divisions/departments/sections and external sources, collecting and collating evidence to complete investigations relevant to settling or defending claims.
- To assess and quantify liability and quantum on all types of civil claim, taking account as appropriate contributory negligence and damage to Force/Authority reputation.
- Undertake effective negotiation/mediation with Claimants and finalise/agree resolution of all types of civil claim.
- Operate in accordance with settlement authority levels/protocols and to set/review realistic case reserves.
- Deal with issues of disclosure of documentation relating to claims against the Chief Constable, to decide which documents should be disclosed and which should be subject of privilege in accordance with Civil Procedure Rules and legal authorities.
- To assist in investigating any potential liability in any employment related claim or matter and to gather any appropriate evidence in relation to the same and assist with the completion of questionnaires, drafting of statements etc.
- To deal with all issues relating to legal costs of solicitors, including those appointed by the Claimants/Defendant associated with civil claims. Including the full assessment of legal costs including disbursements, negotiating costs with Claimants Solicitors, verification of costs incurred by Panel Solicitors and arranging payment of costs where applicable, requesting payments as appropriate.
- To provide strategic and practical advice on civil claims, including the signing of Defences where appropriate and to liaise with the Force insurers, loss adjusters and solicitors who undertake the defence of civil claims.
- To prepare briefing papers, reports etc. to enable management to make informed decisions as to settlement of claims or to decide if an issue should be contested in accordance with settlement/authority levels.
- To obtain court availability from witnesses involved in proceedings to enable legal representatives to set trial dates, to warn witnesses to attend court and to keep them up to date with progress.
- To co-ordinate case conferences, bringing together relevant parties and to attend case conferences and court hearings where appropriate.
- To record the outcome of civil proceedings, settlements or withdrawn claims and apprise management.
- To assist with promoting good practice in relation to claims avoidance and raise awareness of the cost of claims against the force.
- To assist with the management of the external provision of legal services, instructing solicitors, counsel and other professional advisors and consultants ensuring that both in-house and external services are provided in a cost effective manner representing quality and best value for money and that costs are recovered wherever possible.
- To assist in keeping staff up to date on all legal policy and procedural changes and taking a lead role in encouraging the team in usage of case management and time recording systems adopted.
- To assist with the development and maintenance of an expert database for use by the Legal Services Section and any other innovative ideas in relation to the external providers including mediation, claims capture etcl
- To act as a mentor and assist with the development and training of other handlers within the Legal Services Unit.
- To assist in investigating and handling all civil preventative orders, licensing, Proceeds of Crime Act applications and general advice. This will include gathering and assessing appropriate evidence available and assisting with the completion of court bundles, assessing evidence, liaising with witnesses etc.
Profile
Civil Litigation Paralegal -
- Ideally 1+ year experience in civil litigation
- Experience managing own caseload
