Data Protection Lawyer

Location: Bristol and Nationwide

Grade 6

Salary: £60,532

When it comes to nation-changing purpose, few organisations can match the Government Legal Department. Our work touches almost every aspect of UK life. It has a lasting, positive impact on millions of people. And we’re immensely proud of what we do. With us, you can build a career around life-changing law, working on extraordinary issues of rare depth and complexity. Along with this, you’ll receive excellent training, gain a real work-life balance and be part of a truly team-spirited environment.

The role

We’re hiring data protection lawyers across a wide range of government departments, including the Home Office, the Ministry of Justice, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS).

You’ll take on challenging and highly varied work that frequently makes the news. From space travel to sport, terrorism, the prison system and more, you’ll make a significant impact in your assigned projects through assured legal advice and casework.

In particular, you’ll advise on the Data Protection Act, UKGDPR, freedom of information requests and complex information law issues. In some departments, you’ll help develop new data protection policies and legislation, and there are opportunities to collaborate with other departments and bodies across government.

About you

You’ll be an experienced solicitor or barrister with substantial experience in data protection and information law. You’ll also have a sound understanding of public or private law.

We look for excellent communication skills, reliable judgement and a strategic mindset combined with abilities in analysis and research. Being able to welcome views and challenge others is essential, as is a good sense of customer needs and expectations.

You’ll also need a minimum of a 2:1 honours degree. Before your employment can start, you’ll need to complete the Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) as part of the Civil Service background checks.

What we can offer

As a member of the Civil Service, you’ll be able to enjoy flexible working, generous annual leave, a Civil Service pension, a wide range of staff networks and travel and childcare allowances.
