This is a general commercial Legal Counsel role within the Legal Team of a major player in the Rail Sector.
Client Details
Our client is the builder, owner and future operator of one of the largest Rail Infrastructure Projects in the UK.
Description
You will work across a variety of practice areas including commercial, corporate, governance, property, planning, IP/data and government policy matters. If you have an interest in a particular area (e., commercial, property, rail operations and regulation, etc.) you will have the opportunity to shape your own path within the legal team. This role is perfect for someone looking to make their first jump into the in-house world and wanting to gain broad experience
As Legal Counsel you will report directly into a more senior lawyer providing coverage in areas including but not limited to:
- Negotiating, drafting and reviewing key commercial contracts across the organisation's operational remit.
- Advising on property matters such as the negotiation and drafting of access licences.
- Supporting the preparation of a DCO application to authorise the construction and use of railway infrastructure
- Supporting the Operations Team in respect of rail matters, including depot and stabling agreements, track access, rolling stock and other associated matters
- Liaising with external legal advisers on commercial, environmental, planning, policy and regulatory matters.
The organisation is focused on recruiting someone with strong drafting and advisory skills. The organisation regularly engages with specialist planning, rail, and regulatory lawyers so experience in these specialisations is less essential than strong legal skills like drafting and advising. Team fit is crucial.
Profile
The successful candidate will be a Solicitor qualified in the UK (or equivalent Common Law Jurisdiction) and will be likely to be NQ - 2 years in terms of PQE. The organisation is very happy to consider candidates outside of this range.
Experience of corporate, commercial contracts, infrastructure projects property matters and/or advising in a public sector environment would be advantageous but not essential. The organisation is agnostic as to the successful candidate's drafting background, whether it's in M&A, finance, corporate, commercial, construction, property, projects, etc
If you are a lawyer with strong commercial acumen and an eagerness to learn, do not feel at a disadvantage simply because you do not come from a rail, infrastructure projects or construction environment background.
The office is based in Milton Keynes (though many of our team are predominantly remote and the organisation has employees based all over the UK from Scotland to Southend). There is flexibility around working arrangements including long term remote working. For example, many in the legal team work remotely. The Legal Team has a team meeting in the office once a month and regular virtual catch ups.
