Government Legal Department | Intellectual Property Lawyer – Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS)

London, Leeds with flexible working options | £48,985 - £50,500 per annum

Let your IP expertise help make the UK a science superpower.

The Work:

  • The Government Legal Department (GLD) is the largest provider of legal services across government, working with all the main Whitehall departments.
  • From roads to rivers, health to human rights, our work touches on most aspects of public life. From developing and drafting legislation to helping to secure economic and trade relationships, providing legal advice on polices to ensuring value from contracts, our work is stimulating and varied.

The Role:

  • As an expert in intellectual property law within the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), you’ll join a legal team advising on a wide range of issues from the world-leading intellectual property regime, to R&D funding and the UK’s civil space programme.
  • Your main focus will be offering IP, international and public law advice to the Intellectual Property Office, the official UK government body responsible for IP rights including patents, designs, trademarks and copyright.
  • The work is fast-paced, extremely varied and always stretching: it covers support for intellectual property policy development, a variety of public law issues, and legislation drafting.
  • There is also a significant international element to the work.
  • The team is currently advising on the IPO’s Transformation Programme, intended to modernise the operations of the IPO across all registered rights.
  • We are also working closely with the IPO on the Retained EU Law (Revocation and Reform) Bill as it continues its passage through Parliament.

Benefits:

  • GLD encourages its people to develop their skills and provides the opportunity to move between advisory, litigation, employment and commercial law services during your career, should you wish to do so.
