Locum Head of Legal & Deputy Monitoring Officer

3 Months +

East of England

Hybrid working

£500 - 800 per day

A Head of Legal is required to join a local authority in the East of England on a temporary basis for a period of 3+ Months whilst a structural review of the legal structure takes place.

Our client is ideally looking for someone to be the lead on governance matters across the council and provide light touch management across the legal service.

This role is offered on a hybrid working basis with the expectation of attending the office 3-4 times per month. Due to the nature of the role, the client would like someone to take on the position on a full time basis however part-time candidates who can commit to 4 days per week will also be considered.

This role is suitable for a qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Legal Executive with Deputy Monitoring Officer Experience gained within Local Government.

The post will be mainly remote however the successful Head of Legal and Deputy Monitoring Officer will be required to attend the office for committee meetings and other meetings across the council.

Management:

  • Day to day business management of the service with people management
  • Lead and dip in and out of complex casework and major cases

Work:

  • Allocation of legal work
  • 121s and Performance Management
  • Leading on high-profile cases
  • Client liaison
  • Acting as Deputy Monitoring Officer
  • Assisting the Director of Legal and Monitoring Officer as and when required
  • Attendance at statutory meetings, constitutional meetings or full council meetings

Required experience/skills:

  • Experienced Local Government Solicitor, Barrister or CILEX
  • Preferably been a monitoring Officer or Deputy Monioting Officer
  • Managed a team of lawyers at a senior level in local government
  • Preferably able to advise on local authority corporate governance issues
