The challenge

The Government Legal Department (GLD) is the largest provider of legal services across government, working with all the main Whitehall departments. From roads to rivers, health to human rights, our work touches on most aspects of public life. From developing and drafting legislation to helping to secure economic and trade relationships, providing legal advice on polices to ensuring value from contracts, our work is stimulating and varied.

The role

Commercial Law Group (CLG) is a specialist service that offers a single expert source of commercial legal advice across government. Although our legal work is often novel and challenging, CLG is friendly and welcoming, with a strong culture of collaboration and teamwork.

Our Commercial Litigation and Dispute Resolution Team conducts many high-profile and often high-value cases covering everything from commercial contracts to public procurement, intellectual property to construction. Our clients include government departments such as the Department for Business and Trade, Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs, and the Ministry of Defence.

You can expect to be involved in conducting commercial litigation and providing legal advice on litigation, disputes, contentious and some advisory matters. Managing your own caseload, you will work alongside counsel and, where required, external experts. Lawyers in the team actively utilise all methods of Alternative Dispute Resolution, with a particular focus on reaching commercial settlements through negotiation and mediation.  In this senior role, you will also lead other lawyers and support the Deputy Director in delivering the work of the team. We’ll look to you to play an active role in areas such as knowledge management and training.

About you

Litigation experience is essential in these roles. Qualified to practise as a Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive in England and Wales, you have worked in a commercial litigation environment with exposure to commercial and contract law. This will have equipped you with sound legal judgement and appreciation of legal risk. Ready to work at pace, you will also demonstrate sound analytical skills and exceptional powers of communication.

Benefits

Working at GLD is going to be a constant and rapid learning curve. We offer a supportive and thorough career progression & development programme with opportunities to work in a number of legal areas and authorities. In return you can expect a competitive pay package, an excellent Civil Service Pension and flexible working arrangement
