Help us create a better future, quicker

ScottishPower is part of the Iberdrola Group, one of the world’s largest integrated utility companies and a world leader in wind energy. Due to an unprecedented scale of investment and growth we are looking to recruit a Planning Solicitor to join the ScottishPower Legal Team working within our SP Energy Networks (“SPEN”) Business.

SPEN is a Distribution and Transmission Network Operator. We keep electricity flowing to homes and businesses throughout Central and Southern Scotland, North Wales, Merseyside, Cheshire and North Shropshire. Our role is to facilitate the decarbonisation objectives and choices of our customers, communities and stakeholders, and to enable their journey to Net Zero.

The Scottish and UK Governments have set ambitious decarbonisation targets for Net Zero by 2045 and 2050 respectively. The next decade and our network will be crucial in preparing the grid for the increase in electricity demand resulting from decarbonisation of society and the economy.

This role has been created to assist SPEN in securing the required consents for multiple new strategic investment, reinforcement, customer connection and network investment/upgrade projects across each of its licence areas.

Roles & Responsibilities

On a day-to-day basis, you will be responsible for providing legal support in respect of all strategic consenting matters for example:-

  • Managing the legal support for consenting aspects of SPEN’s existing and new development, planning or property projects.
  • Managing and leading the preparation of and conduct of public inquiries, hearings and written submissions relating to obtaining local or central government planning, statutory, development and other consents or permissions required by SPEN including support on consenting elements of the compulsory acquisition of land rights for any developments on SPEN’s network.
  • Supporting teams (including the SPEN Land & Planning team, members of the Executive Team, employees of SPEN, external advisors or consultants as well as government at a local or central level along with all other relevant other statutory bodies or governmental organisations) in relation to the strategic projects in which SPEN is involved in.
  • Providing commercially pragmatic and robust legal advice to all aspects of SPEN in order to facilitate the objectives of the business.
  • Supporting the development of the legal and environmental consenting strategy across multiple strategic investment and network reinforcement projects.
  • Conducting legal analysis and providing support and advice on detailed consenting applications for new infrastructure within SPENs licence areas.
  • Legal review of environmental statements across differing legal jurisdictions.

Lawyers within the SPEN Legal team (and the wider ScottishPower legal team) are viewed as being key members of the project teams and work in close conjunction with key support functions to the business such as the Land & Planning Team. You will have the autonomy to identify, and lead in the implementation of, innovative legal processes and best practice.  You will have regular contact and on-going working relationships with senior managers and executives across the SPEN, ScottishPower and Iberdrola Group.

The successful candidate will be joining a friendly, collaborative, motivated, hard-working and professional in-house legal team.

Planning law experience, in-house experience or experience working in an energy seat during your traineeship would be considered a bonus, however, provided you have an appetite to work and develop a legal career in the energy sector in helping deliver the investment required to upgrade our network to meet Net Zero targets, then we want to hear from you.
